On Friday, Part I of this series covered the broad strokes of what is one of the integration spaces’ pivotal annual gatherings, Gartner’s Application, Architecture Delivery and Integration Summit (AADI). This show sets the coming year’s tone for application integration at Fortune 500 companies, and to a degree for the integration space as a whole. At the last two shows, that tone has been spelled out clearly: A-P-I.

Last week was a good one for APIs in Las Vegas. Gartner brought together the enterprise architecture and integration crowd for its annual Application Architecture Delivery & Integration Summit.  The annual show focused on corporate app development and the integration/API/SOA space is something central to the mobility challenges of today’s enterprise.

There's a paradox out there -- the more innovative and diverse the myriad of employee-owned devices and digital channels a company uses to scale, the less insight that company has into how these new business avenues contribute to business value.  As we near the end of the year, the advent of measurable business objectives, metrics and reports hang in the not-so-far future.

For those of you who are fortunate to be in Las Vegas this week at Gartner's Application Architecture Delivery and Integration (AADI) Summit, you may have heard the news, as word of what CIOs want is starting to filter into conversations. Some key things we hear are that mobile, cloud, social and information analytics are more important than ever.

The Mashery Developer Outreach team is always heading out to hackathons and tech events. They have gone to over 60 in 2012 and the year isn’t over yet. We love to see what developers are capable of building in a weekend, or even a day!

Projects at these events are typically are limited in scope. Team building, education and fun are what draws hackers to attend.

Last week marked a momentous occasion in my life: the first time I voted at a polling station.  I had voted in the past, but somehow, I always ended up voting by absentee ballot.  So, I was full of excitement on my way to the polls, but that waned quickly when I saw the slow and tedious process of voter check-in, consisting of copying voter’s names out of a book and onto a sheet of paper.

The typical stereotype of a Hakathon is a room full of mostly male developers building a mixed bag of hacks, with no specific theme, through a patchwork of APIs and resources.  These stereotypes were shattered at the espnW hack day which combined women, technology and sports, November 9-10 at Stanford University.

The Business of APIs Conference (BAPI) and API University  season wrapped up in London November 6.  If you were there, you were treated to an explanation how APIs create competitive advantages in business by a number of industry experts.  Here is a look at some of the photos capturing our amazing presenters and those of you who were able to join us. 

It has been a busy year for API Management with lots of new players and new types of API products. What does it mean for APIs going into 2013? 

As a larger cross-section of businesses see the value of APIs, API management platforms will become even more important. Imperative to any API Management effort are five areas: design, documentation, analytics, access and uptime.

It’s time for another round of lame Internet outage jokes. Can’t get on Reddit? Great, go back to work. Couldn’t solve your hotel problems with Airbnb yesterday? Maybe it’s a sign you would be more rested after a staycation.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is so pervasive that even a minor hiccup, which is pretty much what we saw on Monday afternoon, causes a whole lot of our connected lives to have bouts of bad breathing. This turn causes the inevitable hand-wringing across the service industry.  But as in the past, I hope sanity reigns.

We got a nice little note in our inbox recently. It was from Visa, but it had nothing to do with our credit limit (eye-rolls and drum kicks appropriate).

“Congratulations on validating compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard,” it said. “The Visa Global Registry of Service Providers - PCI DSS Validated Entities. . . acknowledges service providers that have shown their commitment to security by meeting the requirements of the PCI Standard.  We appreciate your continued support and commitment to safeguarding the payment industry.”

Here at Mashery, we clearly talk about APIs all the time.  While US-based companies make notable moves in the API space, there is a whole world out there beyond our borders.  All over the world, companies are opening up and exposing their data and services to spread their brand for an international audiences.
